The department of Economics one of the oldest in the university. It is the parent department of both political science and commerce. It was established in 1918 as the department of political economy with the legendary professor Gurumukh Nihal Singh Ji as its first head. Political science was born from the mother department in 1920 and commerce in 1951. In its nearly 100 years of existence, the department has been home to a galaxy of eminent scholars like Prof. H.L. Chabalani, Prof. Gyanchand, Prof. R.N.J. Saha, Prof. A.K. Das Gupta, Prof. R.N. Bhargava, Prof D.K. Srivastava etc.

The faculty members have contributed immensely to the existing body of knowledge in the discipline and have served the nation in different capacities, such as regional chief (eastern zone), I.M.F.; deputy director general, NCAER; member, finance commission; director, Madras school of Development Studies, etc.. They have also served a number of prestigious foreign universities like Cambridge, Harvard, Colombo, Ohio and Missouri as visiting fellow/Professors.

In the centenary year of the university, it is a matter of pride to say that department of economics, BHU, is one of the top most teaching departments of the country. Many other faculty members of the Department have also visited foreign universities for academic work and have published papers in reputed National and International Journals. Number of foreign students and students from different parts of the country has been growing over the years. A Research unit by the name of Growth Centre was established in the 1988 as the part of the department to undertake research projects in agrarian relation, rural employment, changing pattern of income distribution and poverty.

The department has a significant footprint in both, the government sector and the corporate world with our alumni occupying important position in academia, banking, research cells, Media analytics and government bodies. Shri L.K. Jha, Dr. P.N. Prasad, Prof, B.R. Shenoy have been some of the profound alumni of this department. Department has adopted semester at U.G. level and choice based credit system since long. Department has a glorious past and endeavoring hard to establish new benchmark of excellence.

B.A(ECONOMICS)


The Economics undergraduate programme provides a strong foundation in economic theory and quantitative tools of economic analysis. It also familiarises students with shifts in development paradigms with particular reference to the state of India’s people in pre and post independence period. The Department has its distinctive ethos where the faculty continually strives to walk as co-learners with the students on the path of knowledge building. The Department’s continuous emphasis on the understanding of the principles of Economics within a multidisciplinary framework has been a great motivator to its students to pursue their dreams and aspirations infused with a people-centric approach. These could involve admissions in prestigious institutions and placements in blue-chip companies. Many of them have also been engaged in diverse fields ranging from civil society to policy making through their education, research, field action and extension.

Some of India's leading economists like Late Prof. A.K. Dasgupta and Prof. R.N. Bhargava have taught here and its teaching program enjoys worldwide repute.

                   

M.A(ECONOMICS)

This is a two-year programme, which imparts students with a rigorous and hands-on training in Economics, with special emphasis on analytical and problem solving skills as well as exposure to emerging policy issues at the national and international levels. This programme involves a successful completion of nineteen courses and a Masters thesis. It is aimed at all those with necessary quantitative prerequisites who would like to be grounded in economic analysis.

PhD

Ranked among top Universities of India, Department of Economics at Banaras Hindu University welcomes Ph.D students. The department provides a highly stimulating environment for research in economic theory, macroeconomics, development economics, Industrial economics and various areas of applied economics. Current PhD students are pursuing research in a variety of areas ranging from economic development, environmental economics, agricultural economics, macroeconomic theory and policy, micro-finance, and international trade etc.
PhD students can avail of generous research fellowships offered by the Banaras Hindu University or JRF grant from University Grants Commission. A congenial and stimulating environment for research includes the active seminar series held every Friday. Various conferences and workshops are organized by department and Faculty of Commerce and Faculty of Management Studies in University campus giving in-depth understanding social sciences. There are ample opportunities to go to national and international conferences and present research. The presence of a very strong Statistics department at BHU, means that Ph.D students interested in applied work or econometrics have additional intellectual resources to draw upon. Recent PhDs from our doctoral program have gone to work at several established research institutes and universities in India and abroad.

DEPARTMENTAL ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES

Generally, the department celebrates its annual festival ‘EQUILIBRIA’.Recently the department celebrated its ‘CENTENARY YEAR‘ .The Dept. organizes FRIDAY-TALK helds each Friday of the week.It also arranges some special talks in each academic year.
